Sing to the Lord a New Song
Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 by Bart Blair“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.“ Psalm 96:1
Lisa and I had lunch with Wilson and Danielle after church last Sunday. They’ve been coming to the church for a couple of weeks now. As newcomers to the church, Wilson said that it was difficult coming into a new church where all the music was unfamiliar. He wondered if there was a way he could learn the songs ahead of the services each week so that he could worship with more confidence.
Well, here you go Wilson (and anyone else who wants to learn them). I’ve posted a couple of songs we’ll be doing this upcoming Sunday:

It’s been a while since we’ve done this song. There are some lyrics that might need a little explanation.
Jehovah Jireh - This is a name for God found in Genesis 22:14 which means “The Lord will provide.”
Jehovah Nissi - This is a name for God found in Exodus 17:15 which means “The Lord is my banner.” This comes from a really neat story found in Exodus 17:8-16. You may have heard a person say, “You lifted my arms,” when you have encouraged or assisted them. This is where that saying comes from.

I just discovered this song a few weeks ago and it resonated with me immediately. And guess what… …another reference to raising our hands; this time, it’s raising hands in worship. Have you ever wondered why people do that? Well, check back on Friday and I’ll post an explanation of this expression of worship.
